Are cameras used to catch speeders and red
light runners?
The cameras shown on the website are used for monitoring traffic conditions and are not used as part of an automated traffic enforcement system. Automated systems typically require a different configuration of cameras than those currently used.
Why is the City of Overland Park spending
money on traffic technology?
Traffic congestion is the number one concern of Overland Park residents according to the "Direction Finder" Survey done by the city in prior years. To help alleviate congestion and travel delays, the city has an aggressive Capital Improvement Program to enhance our roadway system by adding additional travel lanes and enhancing intersection geometrics. In addition to this construction program, the city has looked to technology to try and manage existing roadways more efficiently.
Is the Overland Park system connected to KC
Scout (Kansas & Missouri Departments of Transportation Freeway Management System)?
No, the two systems are currently not electronically connected. In the interim, the staffs of both organizations regularly coordinate efforts. However, there is currently a plan to share more information in the coming years.
Is someone monitoring the system all the time?
Currently the system is monitored from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. with special emphasis given to morning and evening peak period traffic.
Will you ever display the status of your Dynamic
Message Signs on your website?
Yes, there are plans to add additional features to the website over the coming years. Sign status is one of the features that will be added. Other features include current arterial speed information, construction information and accident information.
How many cameras do you have on the site?
There are currently 65 cameras installed in the field. At times, some of these may not be displayed because of equipment malfunction or construction in the area that impacts the camera or communication network.
How did you choose the camera locations?
Cameras were placed on the busiest intersections that were located near the city's fiber network.
Why does the video shut off after three minutes?
The video shuts off after three minutes in order to reduce our operating costs. To restart the video, click on the link to a different intersection.
